About the author

Born in 1950, Robert J. Cressman studied history at the University of Maryland, earning a BA in 1972 and an MA in 1978. He went on to spend his career as a historian within the Department of the Navy, including work with the Naval Historical Center and the Naval History & Heritage Command.

His writing focuses on U.S. naval and Marine Corps history, especially the Second World War. Among his best-known books are The Official Chronology of the U.S. Navy in World War II, USS Ranger: The Navy's First Flattop from Keel to Mast, 1934–1946, and works on Wake Island, Midway, Pearl Harbor, and the carrier Yorktown.

Cressman has also served as editor and a principal contributor to the online Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships. His historical work has been widely recognized, including the John Lyman Book Award in 1999 for The Official Chronology of the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Admiral Arthur W. Radford Award in 2008 for his contributions to the history of U.S. naval aviation.
