He studied at the Art Students' League in New York, worked briefly as an illustrator, and then moved through several book-centered jobs, including bookselling, library work, journalism, and editorial posts in publishing.
His writing often reflected a lively interest in literature, urban life, and the culture around books. He is associated with essays and literary commentary, and his career included work with the New York Tribune, Doubleday, Page & Co., and George H. Doran & Co. He died on January 1, 1947.
