About the author

Born in 1754, Robert Charles Dallas was a British writer whose life connected the literary culture of Britain with the colonial history of Jamaica. He wrote poetry, fiction, and travel-based prose, building a varied career at a time when readers were eager for both personal narrative and accounts of distant places.

Dallas is especially known for works including The History of the Maroons and Recollections of the Life of Lord Byron. Those books helped shape how later readers understood two very different subjects: the Jamaican Maroons and the life of Byron. He also worked as a literary associate in Byron's circle, which has kept his name in view for readers interested in Romantic-era biography and publishing.

He died in 1824. Although he is not as widely read now as some of the figures he wrote about, his books still matter as historical witnesses, recording the perspectives, debates, and literary networks of his time.
