About the author

Born in Moscow, Texas, on September 21, 1877, he grew up in Jasper after his family moved there when his father bought a local newspaper. He later studied at the University of Texas, worked in journalism and court reporting, and became deeply interested in the documentary history of Texas.

He is remembered as a historian and compiler of Spanish and Mexican Texas records, especially materials connected with Nacogdoches. His books include Historic Nacogdoches and Nacogdoches: Gateway to Texas, and his years of archival work made important early Texas sources more accessible to other historians.

He died in Austin, Texas, on November 30, 1955. I could confirm his historical work and major publications, but I could not reliably confirm a suitable portrait image from the sources I found, so no profile image is included.
