About the author
Born in 1841, Robert Bell became one of Canada’s leading geologists, explorers, and scientific public servants. He joined the Geological Survey of Canada while still very young, later studied at McGill University and the University of Edinburgh, and went on to build a long career investigating the geology and geography of vast parts of the country.
Bell is especially remembered for his fieldwork in northern and eastern Canada. Over many years he travelled extensively by canoe, ship, and overland routes, surveying remote areas, reporting on natural resources, and contributing to maps and scientific publications. He was widely respected in his lifetime, and later accounts credit him with naming thousands of Canadian geographical features.
Although he was a scientist rather than a literary author in the usual sense, Bell wrote a large body of clear, practical reports and papers that recorded his expeditions and observations. He died in 1917, leaving behind a record closely tied to the exploration and scientific study of Canada.
