About the author

Born in Bury, Lancashire, on November 15, 1890, Richmal Crompton Lamburn studied classics at Royal Holloway and worked as a teacher before turning to writing full time. She published as Richmal Crompton and became one of Britain's most popular humorous writers.

She is most famous for the Just William series, which began in the early 1920s and followed the unruly, inventive William Brown and his friends, the Outlaws. The books were loved for their lively dialogue, comic chaos, and clear understanding of how children see the world.

Crompton also wrote a large body of adult fiction, though William remained the character most closely associated with her name. She died on January 11, 1969, but her stories have continued to be reprinted and adapted, keeping her humor and storytelling alive for new generations.
