About the author

Born in Lancashire in 1861, Richard Threlfall became an English chemist and engineer whose career moved between universities, laboratories, and public service. He studied at Cambridge, went on to establish the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, and earned a strong reputation for energetic experimental work.

Later in life, he contributed to military science during World War I and was recognized with major honors, including election to the Royal Society. Alongside his scientific papers, he wrote On Laboratory Arts, a book that reflects his hands-on approach to science and the craft of experimentation.

He died in 1932, but he remains an interesting figure for readers who enjoy writers shaped by real-world problem-solving as much as by ideas.
