About the author

Born in London in 1794, Richard Thomson was an English librarian, antiquary, and historical writer. He became known for his deep interest in the history of London, genealogy, heraldry, and old public records, and he spent many years studying the city’s institutions and traditions.

His best-known works include An Historical Essay on the Magna Charta of King John and books on the chronicles, ceremonies, and everyday antiquities of London. Rather than writing only for specialists, he had a gift for gathering scattered historical details and presenting them in a way that made the past feel vivid and approachable.

Thomson died in 1865. For readers drawn to local history, old documents, and the texture of life in earlier England, his work offers a window into how nineteenth-century antiquaries explored and explained the past.
