by Richard Falckenberg
Richard Falckenberg was a German philosopher and historian of philosophy, born in 1851 and died in 1920. He is chiefly remembered for writing clear, accessible histories of philosophy, especially on the development of modern European thought.
His best-known work is History of Modern Philosophy from Nicolas of Cusa to the Present Time, a broad survey that introduced many readers to major thinkers and movements. Rather than focusing on a single school, he was known for explaining how ideas developed across periods and in relation to one another.
Falckenberg's work has lasted mainly through its usefulness: readers have continued to turn to him as a guide to the history of philosophy, especially when looking for a structured overview of early modern and modern thinkers.
