About the author

Richard Falckenberg was a German philosopher who lived from 1851 to 1920. He is chiefly known for History of Modern Philosophy from Nicolas of Cusa to the Present Time, a survey that helped introduce generations of readers to the major thinkers and debates of modern European philosophy.

Contemporary editions of his work describe him as a professor of philosophy at the University of Erlangen. His writing was aimed at readers who wanted something more substantial than a brief outline but more approachable than a massive specialist history, which helps explain why his books continued to circulate in English as well as German.

Falckenberg wrote as both a scholar and a guide. Rather than focusing on a single philosopher, he worked to show how ideas developed across centuries, connecting Renaissance, early modern, and nineteenth-century thought in one continuous story.
