About the author

Richard L. Squires is an American paleontologist and geologist whose work focuses on Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic shallow-marine fossils, especially gastropods and bivalves from the Pacific coast of North America. He taught for many years at California State University, Northridge, where he later became Professor Emeritus of Geological Sciences.

His academic background includes a B.S. and M.S. from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. In addition to his university career, he has also been listed as a Research Associate in Invertebrate Paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Across a long publishing career, he has written extensively on Eocene, Paleocene, and Cretaceous mollusks, stratigraphy, and depositional environments in California, Baja California, and nearby regions. His work is especially valued by readers interested in how fossils help reconstruct ancient coastlines, seas, and ecosystems.
