About the author

Born in Braunschweig on July 18, 1864, Ricarda Huch became one of the most notable German literary and intellectual voices of her era. She studied in Zurich, where women had better access to higher education than in Germany, and went on to earn a doctorate there in 1891. That achievement made her one of the first women in the German-speaking world to receive a doctorate in history-related study.

Huch wrote across an unusually wide range of forms. She produced novels, poetry, and a play, but she was also deeply respected as a historian, especially for works on European history and German Romanticism. Her career shows a rare blend of literary imagination and serious scholarship, which helped make her stand out in both fields.

She died on November 17, 1947, in Kronberg im Taunus. Today she is remembered as a pioneering intellectual whose work opened space for women in scholarship while also leaving behind a rich body of literature and historical writing.
