About the author

Founded in 1919 by Richard S. Reynolds Sr. as the U.S. Foil Company, the business began by making foil for cigarette packaging before expanding into aluminum production and consumer products. Over time, it became Reynolds Metals Company, known both for industrial aluminum operations and for household brands such as Reynolds Wrap.

By the late 20th century, Reynolds Metals had grown into one of the largest aluminum companies in the United States and the world. Its reach extended across mining, refining, manufacturing, and packaging, making it an important part of 20th-century American manufacturing.

The company’s independent run ended in 2000, when it was acquired by Alcoa. Even so, the Reynolds name remains familiar through consumer packaging brands, and the company’s legacy still connects business history, industrial growth, and everyday kitchen life.
