Born in New York in 1859, he studied at Yale and went on to build a career in education as well as writing. He served as principal of Cherry Valley Academy, then taught at Louisville Male High School before becoming its principal, a role that made him a prominent figure in Kentucky education.
Alongside his school work, he wrote textbooks and surveys that helped introduce generations of readers to English and American literature. Among the books associated with him are Psychology and Psychic Culture, History of English Literature, and History of American Literature, all written in a direct, explanatory style meant for students and general readers.
