About the author

Born in Meda, Italy, on April 11, 1925, he earned his medical degree from the University of Milan in 1949. During World War II, he joined the anti-fascist resistance in Italy before eventually moving to the United States, where he built a distinguished career in pathology, cell biology, and cancer research.

He held faculty and leadership roles at several institutions, including Temple University School of Medicine and Thomas Jefferson University, and he was widely recognized for influential work on the cell cycle, growth control, and the role of insulin-like growth factor signaling in cancer. Colleagues remembered him as a scientist whose ideas helped clarify how normal mechanisms of cell division can go wrong in tumors.

He died on March 5, 2023, at age 97. In memorial tributes from scientific organizations, he was celebrated not only for decades of important research and mentorship, but also for a life shaped by courage, curiosity, and lasting commitment to biomedical science.
