About the author

Born in Berlin on May 25, 1823, and dying in Bremen on June 3, 1882, Reinhold Pauli was a German historian best known for his studies of English history. He studied at Bonn and Berlin, earned his doctorate in 1846, and soon developed a lasting scholarly connection to England.

In 1847 he moved to England and worked as private secretary to Baron von Bunsen, the Prussian ambassador in London. After returning to Germany, he held history professorships at Rostock, Tübingen, Marburg, and finally Göttingen, where he spent the later part of his career.

Pauli is remembered especially for writing on medieval England, including books on King Alfred and Simon de Montfort, as well as for continuing Johann Martin Lappenberg’s history of England. His work helped bring English history to German readers with clarity and enthusiasm.
