About the author

Born in Berlin on May 25, 1823, Reinhold Pauli studied at the universities of Bonn and Berlin and later moved to England in 1847. There he served as private secretary to Baron von Bunsen, the Prussian ambassador in London, before turning to scholarship and teaching.

Pauli became known for his work on English history, especially the medieval period. His books included studies of King Alfred, Simon de Montfort, and early England under Norman and Angevin rule, and he also edited and translated historical materials that helped connect British and German scholarship.

He died on June 3, 1882. Though not a household name today, his work earned respect for its serious research and for the way it brought English constitutional and political history to a wider continental audience.
