About the author

Born in Leiden in 1820, he studied at Leiden University and built his career around Arabic manuscripts, philology, and historical research. He later taught medieval and modern history at Leiden, where he spent much of his professional life.

He is especially remembered for his major studies of Islamic Spain, above all Histoire des musulmans d'Espagne, as well as for important work in Arabic lexicography. Scholars and reference works also note his French Huguenot family background, which formed part of his wider intellectual and cultural inheritance.

Although some of his interpretations belong firmly to the scholarship of the 19th century, his books remained influential for decades and secured his place as a significant early historian of al-Andalus.
