About the author

Born in Leiden in 1820, he became one of the Netherlands’ leading Arabists and spent much of his career connected with Leiden University. He was known for his command of Arabic sources and for treating them with unusual care, comparing manuscripts closely and questioning accepted stories when the evidence was weak.

His best-known books include studies of Muslim Spain and early Islamic history, especially work on the history of the Moors in Spain and on Islam’s earliest period. He also contributed important editions and reference works, and his scholarship was valued for both its depth and its precision.

Although some of his interpretations belong to the scholarly world of the 19th century, he remains an important figure in the history of Arabic studies. He died in 1883, leaving behind research that influenced later historians, philologists, and students of the medieval Islamic world.
