About the author

Born in Altenau on December 6, 1885, Karl Friedrich Martin Edmund Reinecke later adopted the name Reinecke-Altenau after his hometown. He trained as a teacher, studied art in cities including Munich, Dresden, and Berlin, and worked in education before dedicating himself more fully to creative work.

He became known as a painter, writer, and Heimatdichter—a regional author deeply interested in the life, speech, customs, and landscapes of the Upper Harz. Museums and local history sources describe his work as a vivid record of his home region, created through paintings, prints, and publications.

Reinecke-Altenau died on March 30, 1943, in Bad Nauheim. Though not widely known outside regional circles, he remains an important cultural figure in Altenau and the Harz, remembered for preserving local traditions and giving everyday mountain life a strong artistic voice.
