About the author

Raymond F. Jones was an American science-fiction author born in Utah in 1915 and active mainly in the 1940s and 1950s. He first broke into the field with stories in Astounding Science Fiction, and he went on to publish a steady run of novels and short fiction during the magazine era of science fiction.

He is most closely associated with This Island Earth (1952), the novel that brought him his widest recognition and was later adapted into the 1955 film of the same name. Readers also remember him for imaginative, idea-driven fiction such as The Year When Stardust Fell and for his knack for turning scientific speculation into accessible, entertaining stories.

Although he never became as famous as some of his contemporaries, Jones remains an important name in mid-century American science fiction. His work has a straightforward, engaging style that still appeals to readers who enjoy thoughtful old-school speculative fiction.
