About the author

Born in Caldas da Rainha on May 10, 1884, Raul Sangreman Proença became known as a Portuguese writer, journalist, and intellectual whose work reached beyond literature into public life. He studied economic and financial sciences in Lisbon and built a reputation as a thoughtful essayist with strong civic convictions.

Proença was closely linked to the world of libraries and journalism, and he helped found Seara Nova, the important Portuguese review that brought together writers and thinkers engaged with the country’s political and cultural future. His career combined literary work, criticism, and public intervention, which made him an influential figure in Portuguese intellectual life.

Political conflict shaped much of his later life. He was exiled to Paris in 1927, returned to Portugal in 1932, and spent his final years in poor health before dying in Porto on May 20, 1941. Today he is remembered for the seriousness of his ideas, his independence of mind, and his lasting place in modern Portuguese culture.
