by Raoul af Hällström
Born in Tampere in 1899, Gustav Torger Raoul af Hällström was a Finnish journalist, theater figure, and writer. Reference works describe him as a journalist and regisseur, and note that he earned a Master of Philosophy in 1923 and studied at Svenska Teaterns elevskola in the early 1920s.
He worked for decades in the press, writing for Svenska Pressen, later Nya Pressen, and then for Helsingin Sanomat. He is also remembered as a theater and dance critic, showing how closely his career was tied to performance as well as literature.
As an author, he published fiction including Tyttö ja omena, which is available through Project Gutenberg. He died in Helsinki in 1975. Even in a short biographical sketch, he comes across as a versatile cultural voice who helped connect journalism, criticism, and creative writing in twentieth-century Finland.
