About the author

Ralph William Bell was a Canadian officer and author best known for Canada in War-Paint, published in 1917. Rather than trying to write a formal history of the war, he built the book from short sketches and impressions, focusing on the daily life, mood, and character of soldiers.

Sources connected with Bell describe him as having served with the First Canadian Infantry Battalion, and later as a captain in the Royal Air Force during the First World War. Veterans Affairs Canada records that he was killed in action on May 17, 1918, and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial.

Because so little biographical detail is widely preserved, Bell is remembered mainly through his wartime writing. That makes his work especially striking: it feels close to lived experience, written by someone who was observing the war from inside it and who did not survive long after his book appeared.
