A Portuguese poet, essayist, and memoirist of the 19th century, he is remembered for writing with warmth and a strong sense of the world around him. His memoirs are especially valued for the lively picture they give of literary and social life in Portugal.

by Raimundo António de Bulhão Pato
Born in Bilbao to Portuguese parents in 1829, Bulhão Pato moved with his family to Portugal during the unrest of the Spanish civil war. He went on to build a literary career as a poet and essayist, publishing from a young age and becoming a familiar name in Portuguese letters.
He is often described not only as a poet but also as a memoirist, and his Memórias remain one of the most interesting ways into his work. Written in a personal, nostalgic tone, they preserve biographical detail and vivid glimpses of the cultural life of his time.
Bulhão Pato was also linked with the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, reflecting the esteem he held in Portuguese intellectual circles. He died in Monte da Caparica in 1912, leaving behind a body of writing that connects literature, memory, and everyday life.
