About the author

Born in Havana in 1841 and raised from childhood in Madrid, Rafael María de Labra became one of the best-known Spanish republican politicians and public intellectuals of his time. Trained in law, he built a career that moved between journalism, scholarship, and parliamentary life, serving repeatedly as a deputy and senator.

Labra is especially remembered for his abolitionist work and for defending reform in Spain's Caribbean territories. He was associated with the Spanish Abolitionist Society and argued forcefully against slavery in Cuba and Puerto Rico, while also pressing for political change in the Antilles. Alongside politics, he wrote extensively on colonial affairs, constitutional questions, education, and international issues.

He was also involved in educational reform and is remembered as one of the founders of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. Across a long public career, he published a large body of work and remained an influential advocate of liberal, reformist ideas until his death in Madrid in 1918.
