About the author

Born in Havana and active mainly in Spain, Rafael María de Labra was a lawyer, educator, lecturer, politician, and prolific author associated with liberal and republican causes. He became especially well known for his antislavery work and for his long public campaign against slavery in the Spanish Caribbean.

Labra was a central figure in the Spanish abolitionist movement, helping keep the issue before both the public and Parliament. He also defended greater autonomy for Cuba and Puerto Rico, and his career brought together intellectual life and political action in a way that made him an influential public voice of his time.

Alongside politics, he was deeply involved in education and served as rector of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza on two occasions. That mix of activism, teaching, and writing helps explain why he is remembered not only as a statesman, but also as a thinker committed to civic reform.
