About the author

Born on December 4, 1638, in London to French parents, Rafael Bluteau joined the Theatine order and built a reputation for wide learning in both religious and secular subjects. He later settled in Portugal, where he preached at court, took part in intellectual life, and became closely associated with the country’s literary and scholarly world.

He is remembered above all for his massive Vocabulario Portuguez e Latino, a landmark dictionary that helped organize and explain the Portuguese language at a time when large-scale reference works were still rare. His writing and scholarship made him an important figure in the history of Portuguese lexicography.

Bluteau died in Lisbon on February 13, 1734. Today he is valued as a careful, ambitious man of letters whose work helped preserve and shape the study of Portuguese for later generations.
