Richard Phillipson Dunn Pattison (1874–1916), often published as R. P. Dunn-Pattison, was a British soldier and academic historian who specialized in military history. He is best remembered today for Napoleon’s Marshals and also wrote Leading Figures in European History.
Before focusing on historical writing, he served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. His work reflects both scholarly training and a practical interest in armies, campaigns, and leadership, which helps explain the direct, readable style of his books.
His life was relatively short, ending in 1916, but his historical studies have remained available through later reprints and digital editions, which suggests a lasting interest in his approach to military biography and European history.
