R. G. (Richard Gay) Pardee

1811–1869

Best known for practical, widely read books on Sunday-school work and horticulture, this 19th-century writer moved comfortably between religious education and hands-on gardening advice. His books show a talent for clear instruction and a wish to make useful knowledge easy to share.

About the author

Richard Gay Pardee was an American author born in Sharon, Connecticut, on October 12, 1811. Records available through FamilySearch identify him as the son of Orrin Pardee and Julia Gay, and note that he married Rebecca Maria Camp in 1836 and had children.

He is remembered chiefly for instructional writing. Under the name R. G. Pardee, he published The Sabbath-School Index in 1868, a substantial guide to Sunday-school teaching and organization, and he also wrote practical books on fruit-growing, including manuals on strawberries and other berries. The surviving bibliographic record suggests a writer interested in useful, applied knowledge rather than purely literary work.

A notice reprinted in The Sunday School Times reported that he died at his home in New York City on February 4, 1869, in his fifty-eighth year, and described him as widely known in American Sunday-school circles. I could not confirm a suitable portrait image from reliable page sources, so none is included here.
