About the author

Born in Glasgow and brought to British Columbia as a boy, he grew up in the province’s Interior and spent much of his life close to the communities he later wrote about. Beyond writing books, he was known in Ashcroft as a newspaperman, editor, storekeeper, and energetic local figure, which gave his work a strong sense of place and everyday detail.

His books included children’s fables and travel writing, and some of his work is now available through Project Gutenberg and other public-domain libraries. He also wrote under the pseudonym Skookum Chuck, a name associated with the Pacific Northwest, and that choice fits the regional character of his stories.

What makes his writing appealing now is its mix of curiosity, practicality, and local color. Whether he was telling stories for younger readers or writing about journeys, he drew on firsthand experience and a life spent observing people, landscapes, and small-town life in western Canada.
