About the author

Born in Warnsveld in 1863 and later based in Amsterdam, Richard Constant Boer was a Dutch linguist and philologist best known for his work on Old Norse. He earned his doctorate at the University of Groningen in 1888 with an edition of Örvar-Odds saga, an early sign of the deep interest in medieval Scandinavian texts that would shape his career.

Boer taught before becoming professor of Old Germanic and Sanskrit at the University of Amsterdam, and he later focused mainly on Scandinavian languages. Alongside his academic posts, he produced editions and studies of Norse sagas, Eddic poetry, metrics, and literary history, helping readers approach both the language and the imaginative world of the medieval North.

Today he is remembered less as a novelist than as a patient interpreter of old texts: a scholar who preserved, explained, and contextualized works that might otherwise have remained distant to many readers. For listeners interested in myth, saga, and the history of language, his books open a window onto the long storytelling traditions of northern Europe.
