About the author

Born in 1841, Richard Claverhouse Jebb was a Scottish-born classical scholar who built a distinguished academic career at Cambridge. He studied and later taught there, and became especially admired for his command of Greek language and literature.

He is best remembered for editions, translations, and criticism of Greek authors, above all Sophocles. His writing helped make demanding ancient texts more approachable for students and general readers, while still earning deep respect from specialists.

Jebb's career reached beyond the university as well: he was knighted and also served as a Member of Parliament. He died in 1905, leaving a reputation as one of the leading classical scholars of his time.
