About the author

Born near Dundee in 1841, Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb became one of the best-known classical scholars of his time. He was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge, and built his reputation through brilliant work in Greek language and literature.

Jebb taught at Glasgow before returning to Cambridge, where he served as Regius Professor of Greek. His editions, translations, and criticism—especially on Sophocles—were widely admired for their clarity and learning, and they helped shape how generations of English-speaking readers encountered ancient Greek texts.

Beyond university life, he also served as Member of Parliament for Cambridge University. Honored late in life with the Order of Merit, he died in 1905, leaving behind a body of scholarship still associated with exactness, elegance, and a deep love of the classics.
