About the author

Born in Brisbane in 1934, David Malouf became one of Australia’s most admired writers. He studied at the University of Queensland, later taught at the University of Sydney, and built a body of work that ranged across fiction, poetry, essays, drama, and opera librettos.

His writing is closely linked with Queensland, especially Brisbane, which appears vividly in work such as Johnno. Over the years he earned wide recognition, including the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Malouf died on April 22, 2026. He is remembered for elegant, thoughtful writing that explored family, history, belonging, and the way ordinary lives connect with larger cultural stories.
