About the author

Pye Henry Chavasse was a 19th-century British surgeon and medical writer based in Birmingham. Title pages from his books describe him as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the Obstetrical Society of London, and a former president of Queen's College Medico-Chirurgical Society, Birmingham.

He is best known for popular health books written for ordinary readers rather than specialists. Among the works linked to his name are Advice to a Mother on the Management of Her Children, Advice to a Wife, Advice to a Wife and Mother, The Physical Training of Children, and Counsel to a Mother. In the preface to one edition of Advice to a Wife and Mother, he says the book had sold in very large numbers, which fits its long publishing life and many later editions.

Chavasse's style was direct, practical, and strongly shaped by Victorian ideas about family life, health, and child-rearing. Today, his books are often read as a mix of period medical guidance and social history, offering a vivid picture of what many 19th-century families were encouraged to believe about pregnancy, infancy, and domestic care.
