by Prophet Muhammad
Born in Mecca around 570 CE, Muhammad is described in standard reference works as an Arab religious, social, and political leader and the founder of Islam. According to Islamic tradition, he began receiving revelations around 610, preaching devotion to one God in a society where polytheistic worship was common.
After facing opposition in Mecca, he and his followers migrated to Medina in 622, a turning point known as the Hijra. There he became the leader of a growing community, and over the following years his message spread across much of Arabia.
He died in Medina in 632 CE. His life and teachings became central to Islamic belief and practice, and his legacy has shaped religion, law, culture, and history far beyond the Arabian Peninsula.
