by Princess of Belgium Louise
Born on 18 February 1858, she was the eldest daughter of King Leopold II of Belgium and Queen Marie Henriette. In 1875 she married Prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, linking her to another major European dynasty and placing her firmly inside the world of nineteenth-century royal politics.
Her life later became known less for court ceremony than for personal turmoil. Reliable sources describe a troubled marriage, a highly public scandal around her relationship with Count Géza Mattachich, and periods in which she was forcibly confined and drawn into bitter financial and family disputes.
She died on 1 March 1924. Today she is remembered as a striking and complicated royal figure whose life showed how restricted, public, and precarious a princess’s position could be behind the glamour of monarchy.
