About the author

Born in Haarlem on July 25, 1683, Pieter Langendijk was a Dutch dramatist, poet, and damask weaver whose writing earned a lasting place in Dutch literary history. He was closely tied to Haarlem for much of his life and later also served the city as its official historian, though that history remained unfinished.

Langendijk is especially remembered for plays and poems that mix humor with a keen look at human behavior. His work often satirized vanity, greed, and fashionable crazes, giving readers and theatergoers a vivid sense of everyday life in the Dutch Republic.

Alongside his literary work, he was active in Haarlem's cultural world, including the chamber of rhetoric Trouw Moet Blijken. He died in Haarlem in July 1756, leaving behind a body of writing that still stands out for its wit, energy, and strong feeling for character.
