by Pieter Langendijk
Born in Haarlem in 1683, he worked not only as a writer but also as a damask weaver and later as a city artist. Despite a difficult start in life after his father's early death, he built a literary reputation through plays and poems that closely observed the people and manners around him.
His comedies are especially remembered for their satire. Again and again, he turned a clear eye on social climbing, deception, and the gap between appearances and reality, giving his work an energy that still makes it stand out in accounts of 18th-century Dutch literature.
Pieter Langendijk died in Haarlem in 1756. He is often described as the most prominent Dutch comic playwright of the 18th century, and his writing remains an important window into the humor and social tensions of the Dutch Republic.
