Born in Rotterdam on February 27, 1812, Pieter Harting became one of the Netherlands' best-known 19th-century naturalists. He worked across several fields, including biology, microscopy, hydrology, botany, and biostratigraphy, and built a reputation for explaining scientific ideas clearly to a broad audience.

Harting is especially remembered for his work with microscopes and for helping readers see the natural world in fresh detail. He was also an early Dutch supporter of evolutionary thinking and remained active in scientific writing and research throughout his life.
