About the author
Born in Oudkarspel in 1867, Pieter "Piet" Visser was a Dutch teacher and writer of historical fiction. He published under the name P. Visser and died in Anna Paulowna in 1929.
He is especially remembered for his boys' books and youth fiction, much of it issued by the publisher Kluitman in Alkmaar. His stories drew on dramatic episodes from history, with titles such as Heemskerck op Nova Zembla, De vliegende Hollander, Heemskerck voor Gibraltar, Het beleg van Alkmaar, and De laatsten der Arkels.
Visser's work shows a clear love of storytelling with a strong historical setting. Even from the surviving bibliographic record, he comes across as a writer who wanted to make the past vivid, readable, and exciting for younger audiences.
