About the author

Born in 1750 in New Haven, Connecticut, he was the son of the theologian Jonathan Edwards and Sarah Pierpont. He graduated from Princeton in 1768, studied law, and built a career that brought him into public life during and after the American Revolution.

He served in the Continental Congress and later became a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. Sources also note his ties to an influential family network: he married Frances Ogden, and his brother Aaron Burr Sr. had been the father of Aaron Burr, making him part of one of early America's best-known family circles.

Remembered less as a literary figure than as a statesman and jurist, he stands out as someone whose life touched religion, law, education, and politics in the founding era. For listeners interested in early American history, his story offers a window into how closely connected those worlds could be.
