About the author

Born in Douai in 1818 and later dying in Morlaix in 1895, Pierre Zaccone was a prolific French novelist and dramatist whose career was closely tied to the rise of popular serialized fiction in newspapers. Gallica describes him as an emblematic writer of the roman populaire, and notes that he produced more than seventy works.

Zaccone became especially known for feuilletons: lively, accessible stories built for suspense and momentum. His novels often moved through crime, mystery, and social drama, and several are identified as early detective fiction. Contemporary library and reference sources also note that he collaborated on some stage works, including dramas connected to his fiction.

Much of his success came from writing that was direct, energetic, and rich in dialogue, which helped his stories reach a wide reading public. Though not as famous today as some of his peers, he remains an important figure in the world of 19th-century French popular literature.
