About the author

Born in Paris in 1739, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours became a leading French political economist and a disciple of the physiocrats. He worked with influential officials including Turgot, wrote extensively on economics, and was ennobled by Louis XVI, who granted him the title associated with Nemours. In 1789, he was elected as a deputy of the Third Estate.

A royalist during the French Revolution, du Pont de Nemours was imprisoned after the arrest of the king. He later moved to the United States with his family, arriving in 1800, and returned to diplomatic work between France and America. He helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and spent his final years in Delaware, where he died in 1817.
