Born in Rennes in 1748 and dying in Paris in 1816, Pierre-Louis Ginguené was a French journalist, poet, critic, and literary historian. He took part in the intellectual life of Revolutionary France and became especially known as a founder and leading voice of La Décade philosophique, an important journal of ideas and literature.
His career moved between letters and public service. He also worked in education administration during the Revolution, and later wrote on music, politics, and literature. Today he is most often associated with his studies of Italian writing, which helped introduce and explain that tradition to a wider French audience.
Ginguené's work sits at the meeting point of journalism, criticism, and scholarship. For listeners interested in the world of late eighteenth-century France, he offers a vivid example of an author who was not only writing books, but also taking part in the cultural and political arguments of his age.
