Pierre Billotey

1886–1932

A French novelist of the 1920s and early 1930s, he wrote with wit, lightness, and a quietly observant eye. Though little known today, his work has drawn renewed interest thanks to later rediscoveries of novels like Sao Kéo ou le bonheur immobile.

About the author

Born in Paris on December 1, 1886, Pierre Billotey was a French writer who published a number of novels before his early death in Paris on April 5, 1932. French reference sources also note that he was the brother of the painter Louis Billotey.

Later critics have described him as both a playful novelist and a moral observer, someone whose fiction combined a light touch with serious craft. His novel Sao Kéo ou le bonheur immobile, first published in 1930 and reissued decades later, helped bring his name back into view for modern readers.

Because he is now a relatively obscure figure, detailed biographical information is limited in the sources that are easy to confirm. What remains clear is the outline of a short literary career, centered in interwar France, and a body of fiction that still seems to reward rediscovery.
