Born in 1880, Philipp Witkop became known in Germany as a writer, literary critic, and scholar of German literature. He wrote on modern German poetry and later published work on Goethe, including Goethe: Leben und Werk.
He is especially associated with Kriegsbriefe gefallener Studenten, a collection of letters by students killed in the First World War. The book brought him broad recognition and helped shape how many readers remembered the war and a lost generation of young Germans.
Witkop died in 1942. Today he is chiefly remembered for combining literary scholarship with a strong interest in remembrance, education, and the cultural meaning of war.
