About the author
Born in Würzburg on June 13, 1849, Philipp Stöhr studied medicine there and built his career in anatomy and histology. He earned his medical doctorate in 1873, later taught at the University of Würzburg, and also served as a professor at the University of Zürich before returning to Würzburg.
Stöhr became especially known for developing a strong school of histology and embryology. His work focused on microscopic anatomy, and he played an important role in turning histology into a more systematic and teachable field for medical students.
He is best remembered for his Lehrbuch der Histologie und der mikroskopischen Anatomie des Menschen, a textbook that became a standard reference and went through many later editions. Stöhr died in Würzburg on November 4, 1911, but his influence continued through both his teaching and his writing.
