About the author

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1874, Philip Sanford Marden built a career in journalism as well as travel writing. He studied at Dartmouth College and later at Harvard Law School, but he became best known for his connection to the Lowell Courier-Citizen, where he spent many years as editor.

His reputation rested not only on newspaper work but also on books shaped by extensive firsthand travel. Dartmouth Alumni Magazine described him as a lifelong journalist and noted that his travels led to well-written books on Greece, Spain, Egypt, the Caribbean, and Portugal. Titles associated with him include Greece and the Aegean Islands and A Wayfarer in Portugal.

Marden belonged to a generation of writers who helped readers explore the world through lively description and practical observation. He died in 1963, leaving behind work that blends the steadiness of an editor with the curiosity of a traveler.
