About the author
Philip Durham Trotter (1844–1918) was a Scottish-born British Army officer and travel writer. Born in Edinburgh and educated at Harrow, he served with the 93rd Highlanders and took part in the 1880 British mission led by Sir John Drummond Hay to meet Sultan Moulay Hassan in Fez, Morocco.
Trotter described the expedition in Our Mission to the Court of Morocco in 1880, published in 1881 and illustrated with photographs. He continued his military career in senior command and staff positions, was knighted in 1908, and later became known as Colonel Sir Philip Durham Trotter.
