by Peter Lauridsen
Born on September 14, 1846, in Jegerup near Haderslev, Peter Lauridsen became a Danish geographical-historical writer and educator. Danish reference works describe him as both a historian and a schoolman, reflecting a career shaped by teaching as well as research and writing.
He studied at the teacher-training college in Tønder and later moved to Copenhagen after the political changes in Schleswig. Over time he built a reputation through historical and geographical works, especially on Southern Jutland and on exploration history.
Among the books associated with him is a major work on Vitus Bering and the Russian expeditions of 1725–43, which helped preserve interest in Arctic and North Pacific exploration. He died in Copenhagen on May 13, 1923.
