About the author

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Percy Goetschius studied music in Stuttgart, Germany, and went on to build an international reputation as a composer, theorist, and teacher. He taught in Stuttgart before returning to the United States, where he later joined the faculties of Syracuse University and the New England Conservatory.

Goetschius is best remembered for his influential textbooks on musical structure and composition. Written in a direct, methodical style, they were designed to help students understand how music is built, and they remained widely used for many years.

Although he composed as well, his strongest legacy is as an educator. His career bridged European conservatory training and American music education, making him an important figure in the history of music theory teaching.
