About the author

Born on August 30, 1853, Percy Goetschius was an American musician, theorist, and teacher who became especially known for his work in music education. He studied in Stuttgart, Germany, and built an international reputation through his clear, systematic approach to teaching composition and musical structure.

Goetschius taught at the Conservatory of Music of Stuttgart and later in the United States, including at the Institute of Musical Art in New York, one of the schools that became part of Juilliard. More than as a composer or pianist, he is remembered for influential books on harmony, counterpoint, and musical form that shaped how these subjects were taught.

He died on October 29, 1943. Today, he is still of interest to musicians and music students because his writing captures an important moment in the history of music theory teaching, when formal study of composition was being organized for modern conservatories.
