About the author

Born in 1866, Pencho P. Slaveikov grew up in a literary family as the son of the major Bulgarian writer Petko Slaveykov. A serious childhood accident left him with lasting health problems, but it also shaped the inward, reflective tone that became one of the hallmarks of his writing.

He became one of the central figures of Bulgarian modern literature and was closely associated with the influential Misal circle, which pushed Bulgarian writing toward a more European, philosophical, and symbolist style. Along with poetry, he wrote essays and criticism, and he also served as director of the National Library and later the National Theatre in Sofia.

In his later years, he shared a deep personal and creative bond with the poet Mara Belcheva. After political conflicts and dismissal from his cultural posts, he left Bulgaria and died in 1912 in Italy, only a year before being reportedly considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
