About the author

Born in Tryavna in 1866, Pencho Petkov Slaveykov was the youngest son of the writer and public figure Petko Slaveykov. He became one of the key figures in the Bulgarian literary circle Misal (“Thought”), which played a major role in shaping modern Bulgarian literature.

As a young man, he suffered a serious accident connected with exposure to extreme cold, and the lasting effects stayed with him for the rest of his life. Even so, he built an important literary career as a poet, critic, editor, and cultural leader, and he studied widely in European thought and literature.

Slaveykov is especially remembered for bringing a broader, more inward-looking and artistic vision to Bulgarian writing. Among his best-known works are Epic Songs, Dream of Happiness, On the Isle of the Blessed, and the unfinished Bloody Song. He died in Brunate, Italy, in 1912.
