by Pedro Muñoz Seca
Born in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, in 1881, Pedro Muñoz Seca studied philosophy and literature before building a career as a playwright. He became especially known for witty farces and for helping popularize the astracán, a style of comic writing built on absurd situations, wordplay, and fast-moving jokes.
He wrote many successful plays, often for Madrid audiences, but La venganza de Don Mendo is the work most closely linked with his name. Its mix of parody, theatrical energy, and comic language made it one of the most enduring hits in Spanish theater.
His life ended tragically in 1936, when he was killed during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. Even so, his work has continued to be read, staged, and remembered for its humor, timing, and sheer delight in language.
